Jot Touch 4 + iPad Mini + Procreate = FUN!
My Review on Using the
Jot Touch 4 with
Procreate on my
iPad Mini
So I broke down and bought an iPad Mini. Why? Because I want to use it as a “showcase” for my clients - instead of my usual: “...Wait, let me show you my work... give five minutes to launch my laptop... and I’ll show!... wait!...”
My second reason was to be able to “sketch ideas on the go.” As to that, my brother (Robert M. Guthrie of PixelToonsInk.com,) showed me his
Jot Touch 4, a “pressure-sensitive” pen for iPads and other mobile devices with touch-sensitive screens...
I also used this great painting program called
Procreate (which you can buy through the
App Store,) but I digress. Here’s my review...
The PenThe
Jot Touch 4 has great weight & feel. Not as light as a
Wacom Intuos pen - for
Cintiqs and
tablets, but not too heavy either…
The pen comes with a nifty
USB charger, with a magnet for the pen to adhere to (one of the strongest magnets I’ve ever encountered!)...
The “Thick-N-Thin” TestThe
Jot Touch 4 has GREAT pressure sensitivity! The
Jot Touch 4 has a pressure sensitivity level of 2,048, which means that for a device like the iPads, which have Retina displays (2048x1536px,) require less pen pressure (in grams) for the pen to “register” a stroke. A tablet with 1024 levels of pressure, require 3 grams of pressure/force for the pen to register.
A pressure sensitivity of 2048 only requires 1 gram of pressure/force for the pen to register...
The one thing about the new iPads (including the iPad Minis,) is that the are a bit “less sensitive” than the older versions. I felt that with this new model I had to “push-down” a bit harder than with a Wacom Intuos pen, but you get used to it after a little while...
Issues
The only issue I see, is that the
Jot Touch 4 is design with “
Palm-Rejection” technology: software design so you can draw on your device without the palm, BUT most of the drawing software (like Procreate,) are not caught-up to recognize this new feature. I read that procreate and Autodesk Sketch Pro will be releasing new versions of their software to take advantage on the Palm-Rejection feature...
And that’s about it! Great feel, a bit “noisy” at first, but you get used to it, similar to working on a Cintiq…
Test 1
Here’s a quick 15 minute sketch of
Captain Ahab (I’ve been reading
Moby Dick by Herman Melville:
As you can see, great detail and very nice “pressure” in the pen. You can get a great thick-n-thin out of your strokes. The actual image was based on the “Retina” setting that Procreate gives you (2048x1536px,) so you can zoom-in a lot!...
Hope this helps anyone with their decision on purchasing a Jot Touch 4!
Cheers!
